With
a surface area of 19 Sq. Km. Capraia is characterized by a
rough and wild landscape, as yet untouched by man. It is mountainous,
with a 300/400 mt. ridge which creates two diverse slope:
one facing westward with sheer walls, abounding in caves and
ravines: one facing eastward more gentle, with valleys and
coves.
The inhabited part is limited to the port and bay and to the
dominating promontory, where the village of Capraia rises;
the rest of the island is uninhabited.

From the village a path leads inland, providing nature lovers
with tralils to walk in complete solitude, as far as the "little
fountains" of spring water and, beyond, to the "signal"
where a ravine allows a view of the sea facing Corsica.
Another trail leads to the "small lake", a pool
formed in the crater of an extinct volcano.
The rare beautyof the island can be best appreciated from
the sea: dotting the coast the island presents charming coves,
ancient watch towers, islets where seagulls nest. Particularly
beautiful is "Cala Rossa", remains of craters made
up fire-red rock, while the bay surrounding the port i excellently
suited for wind-surfing, the coast offers interesting underwater
excursions, because of the abundance and variety of marine
flora and fauna.
The accomodations (hotels, boarding houses, rental apartments,
restaurants, etc) are on the whole somewhat limited, even
though hospitable, therefore it is always advisable to make
the necesary reservations, expecially for the months of July
and August.
The island is destined to became a natural park located at
36 nautical miles away from Italian costand 18 from France,
in the arcipelago toscano, one hour driving from Florence.
The coast sheer above the deep blue sea is
gorgeous, above all on the norton of the island that is a
marine reserve. On the east side (On the harbour) torre al
bagno stands under S. Giorgio Castle on a naturally levelled
esplande where eveybody can lie at the sun and take a bath
in the pure and clear sea water.
If you have a boat youcan easly reach the only beach in the
island, cala della Mortola , not far the harbour where even
children can play and take a safe bath in the low water
If you like walking, you will find a big selection of great
destinations: Cala Rossa for Istance, is one of the nearest
to the village and it was one of the craters of the volcano.
the main crater is now a nice pond called il Laghetto or stagnone
where migratory birds usually stop among the flowers of the
Mediterranean maquis, during their flight to Africa.
Capraia offers it's visitors a uniquevariety of under water
marine life that eveybody can enjoy, just snorkeling or scuba
diving
