The wines
Grape vines have existed in Tuscany longer than man; in
the Arno valley fossils of this plant were discovered that
are 2 million years old. From early Etruscan times, each
farmer here has had a small vineyard to produce his own
wine. Today, the farmer’s long experience with winemaking,
coupled with the right soil and climate, produce some of
the finest wines of the world. The entire world knows the
red, strong, Chianti, but the region offers a vast array
of splendid wines, from the delicate "Bianco di Pitigliano"
to the dense, savory "Morellino di Scansano".
The most precious of all of them, perhaps, is the famous
"Brunello di Montalcino", coming from the heart
of the Siena region. This itinerary tours you through the
regions where these wines are produced, visiting wineries
for tasting, as well as sampling the fine cooking of these
parts of Tuscany.
The Coast
The Tuscan coast, sparsely inhabited until 100 years ago,
because of frequent outbreaks of malaria, is today one of
the most important tourist destination in the region. It
is a very wonderful coast, where long beaches of clear sand
alternate with rocky promontories and small bays. Everywhere
the water is clean and safe, and inland a few kilometers
there are scores of interesting artistic, archeological
and nature spots. This long itinerary visits some of the
most beautiful and interesting spots along the Tuscan coast.
The Province of Siena
The Siena province has been called "the most beautiful
of Italy", and few places in the world can boast so
large a number of sites of artistic and historical interest,
immersed in so beautiful a landscape. Charming little villages,
artistic towns, castles, hot springs, abbeys and country
churches, are scattered among wonderful rolling hills, dotted
by woods and rows of cypresses. The Siena province is a
magical place, an incredible melting between human creativity
and the nature, which will leave visitors breathless. This
itinerary brings you to some of these wonderful spots.
Natural wonders of Tuscany.
Tuscany is best known mainly for its art and for its wonderful
towns, but it offers many natural wonders, also. These range
from the centuries old forests on the Appennins Mountains,
to the wonderful seacoast, to its small offshore islands.
This itinerary offers travel to some of the most interesting
natural spots in Tuscany, from the huge marble quarries
of the northern part of the region, to the intact sea cost
of the south, from the geothermal area of Larderello, to
the 2 million year old erosions of the Balze.
Etruscan land
details
The Etruscans, who predated the Romans, were the first great
builders of towns and monuments in Italy. Since their language
and culture differed from those of Italy at the time, scholars
believe that they originated in the Middle East, and built
towns and other structures in Tuscany to support their iron
ore mining in the region. While much of the evidence of
their accomplishments was destroyed by the romans, archeologists
have unearthed many Etruscan buildings and other artifacts.
Most significantly, their practice of burying their dead
in a large underground “necropolis” has provided
valuable, undisturbed examples of their customs. This itinerary
displays the most important Etruscan ruins in Tuscany. details
Nothern towns
Northern Tuscany is little known to most tourists, but here
lay some of the most interesting and beautiful sights to
be seen in the region. From the rich history of Pisa, to
the many small towns filled with quiet churches, squares,
palaces and museums, this area offers a wide variety of
experiences. This itinerary offers a relaxed, contemplative
encounter with the lifestyle, art and cultural history of
northern Tuscany.
Southern towns
The towns in the south of Tuscany were, during the middle
ages, generally smaller and poorer than the towns in the
northern part of the region. But, in spite of this, these
towns did their best to decorate themselves with art masterpieces
and imposing, beautiful churches and palaces. The less central
position of these towns, in respect to Tuscan trade routes,
allowed them to remain almost intact until today, preserving
inside their medieval city centers remains of the Etruscan
and Roman civilizations that founded them. This itinerary
offers a sampling of the most interesting towns in southern
Tuscany.
The Maremma details
The big, coastal plain at the southern end of Tuscany is
called Maremma. Until 100 years ago it was a vast expanse
of malaria ridden swamps, and almost uninhabited. For this
reason, today it has no large towns, and is mainly a resort
area. Maremma attracts millions of tourists each year, mainly
because of the splendid, clean sea, but also due to the
many interesting natural, artistic and archeological spots
it boasts. This itinerary brings you to these wonderful
spots. details |
